Insulating your SelectHaus cabin

The timber walls of your SelectHaus cabin, particularly those of 44mm or thicker offer a wonderful natural thermal insulation. Much better than any thinner board cabins or steelsheds.  In addition, the double-glazed windows also prevent escape of heat to a significant degree. However, heat can be lost through not only walls, doors and windows, but also through the roof, floor and though insufficient gap sealing.

Given that our cabins are used in full variety of climatic conditions that Australia offers, there are several measures that you can take to further improve the thermal insulation of your cabin, if you desire. At the same time these measures also significantly improve sound insulation.

Floors

Heat loss through the floor can be relatively cheaply and easily minimised by adding underfloor insulation during the construction of your cabin.

Installing sheets of stiffpolystyrene (EPS) or other recognised insulation between the floor bearers, immediatelybeneath the floorboards is an ideal solution. This material can be ready sourced from your building materials supplier.

Alternatively sometimes the floorboards are installed over yellow tongue board, to give a thicker thermal layer.

Roof

There are number of choices available to complete the roof cover and at the same time ensure differing degrees of insulation.

One is to use the roofing cover kit that we supply. This is either asphalt shingle tiles with underlay, or EPDM (in the case of low slope angle roofs). Most of our customers are satisfied with this solution and this will be the least expensive. However, in the case of either intense heating from sunlight or cooling from use in winter months in colder climates, you may choose to further insulate by adding insulation either externally or internally.

For external insulation over the roof boards, you may source a kit of roofing membrane, battens, insulation material (there are many to choose from, including insulation wool or batts, but we like Foilboard), then cover by a corrugated steel roof like Colorbond complete with flashings.

Alternatively, you may choose to line the inside of the roof boards, by creating a ceiling cavity with panels of plywood or plasterboard for example. This can be filled with the insulation material of your choice.

Gaps

It is important to properly install and adjust your cabin’s windows and doors to prevent any air leaks. In addition, you should seal any significant gaps from cracks or in the timber wall/roof board joint with a gap sealer.

Walls

If you have opted for a thinner walled SelectHaus cabin and live in a cooler location, you may choose to further line your cabin’s inner walls in a similar style to lining the roof cavity. However, this is rarely necessary.
