SelectHaus cabin painting & maintenance

Painting is essential to maintain the quality and long life of your SelectHaus cabin.

Unprotected wood absorbs moisture, which can lead to swelling or distortion. After some time, timber also becomes greyish without treatment or may even become mouldy. To protect the timber details of your house, you must seal it with sufficient coats of a wood preservative or paint.

Wood is a natural material. Cracks, knots, colour tone variations and changing structure of wood are not defects, but a result of wood growing and normal, as a natural material.

We recommend that you apply a wood preservative or impregnation to the underside of the floorboards before fitting them, as this will prevent moisture penetration.

We recommend that you paint the inside and outside of doors and windows, to prevent possibility of future warping from water absorption.

After the house assembly is complete, you must paint all timber components of the house, including window and door frames, with a wood primer plus two full coats of wood paint to protect it from UV radiation and moisture ingress. Particularly important are to properly coat the exposed ends of each log, to prevent capillary moisture absorption. You should also paint both sides of the window and door architraves.

Some shrinkage of timber exposed to temperature extremes is to be expected and you may need to paint any gaps caused from log shrinkage after a few months, particularly surfaces exposed to sun exposure.

As with any wood surface, recoating may be needed after some years, depending on the degree of UV exposure and quality of paint used.
